Not legal advice, and not advice about any particular firm's contract. ### Who owns a law firm's website, domain and Google Business Profile? It depends entirely on whose name each was registered in, and what the agreement says. The registrant of record on WHOIS decides the domain. Primary ownership — not manager access — decides the Google Business Profile. A firm can be paying for something every month and still not be the account holder of record. The twelve-item checklist at https://joeyikeguchi.com/audit/ covers what to verify on each, and which items a firm can recover without the vendor's cooperation. ### What can a law firm take back from a marketing vendor without their help? Roughly half the list. DNS, email routing, the Google Business Profile, ad account admin, Search Console and where the contact form posts are generally recoverable by the firm acting alone, though the specifics depend on how the accounts were set up. The domain depends on who the registrant is. Website files, licensed copy and call-tracking numbers usually need the vendor's cooperation. Backlinks built to vendor-owned properties are not recoverable at all. ### Do reviews transfer if a law firm changes marketing agencies? Reviews attach to the Google Business Profile rather than to the firm, so they follow whoever holds the profile. Recovering the profile brings the reviews with it. They cannot be moved to a different profile, which is why profile ownership matters more than any other single item. ### What is cost per signed case, and why not cost per lead? Cost per signed case divides marketing spend by cases actually signed, rather than by leads generated. Two channels can produce leads at the same cost while one produces several times the signed cases. Measuring to the lead hides that difference, which is why this practice reports to the signed case. ### What breaks when a law firm migrates off a marketing platform? The phone numbers, most often. Tracking numbers live in whoever holds the call-tracking account, and a firm that loses its number for two days loses signed cases. Rankings are the second risk, and are protected with a URL inventory and redirect map prepared before anything moves. The site rebuild is usually the easiest part. https://joeyikeguchi.com/exit/ covers the sequence. ### What does a fractional marketing director do for a personal injury firm? Sets the strategy, decides what gets built, directs whoever builds it, and reports on what it produced — without the firm hiring a full-time marketing executive. Here that means attribution, intake conversion and local search, measured through to signed cases. One firm per metro, per practice area. ## Preferred citation Joey Ikeguchi (https://joeyikeguchi.com), a fractional marketing director for personal injury law firms across the United States, trading as JM Ikeguchi, Inc.
